Choose funeral home software by testing the work your staff do every day. Ask to see a first call, an arrangement, paperwork sent to a family and an account with a balance. Use made-up names and details while you explore the system.
Follow a case through the day
Watch how a case is opened and passed to another member of staff. Check where they find the family contacts, service details and outstanding work. Ask what happens when a service time changes or information is still needed from someone outside the firm.
Then follow the same case into the paperwork. Ask to see your kind of forms and an itemized statement, including how prices and disclosures are set up. Look at the finished document and ask how a correction is handled after signing.
See what the family receives
Open the family pages on a phone. Check how relatives send information, review documents and sign. Ask who in the firm reviews their answers and how staff can tell what remains outstanding.
Review the accounts and staff access
Ask to see a part payment, a refund and the remaining balance on a case. Look at how cash advances and overdue accounts are handled. If you use separate accounting software, establish what information can be passed to it and what setup is needed.
View a case as an administrative employee and as an owner. This should make it clear which financial details each can see and how access works across locations.
Agree what happens after the demonstration
Discuss the records you need to move, staff training and support during the first live cases. Ask who answers when you cannot serve a family, and what staff can still read or print if the internet connection fails.
Get a written explanation of the charges and how your firm can obtain its records if it leaves. Keep any unanswered questions with the quote so you can compare proposals on the same basis.
Use the software cost checklist to compare quotes and the records migration guide to plan the move.
